Comedian and podcast host Tom Segura recently shared insights into his career and the evolving landscape of comedy with The Red & Black. As he prepares for his "Come Together" tour, including a stop at Akins Ford Arena on January 30th, Segura discussed his journey into stand-up, the influence of social media on comedy, and how podcasting has shaped his approach to performing. His reflections highlight both the challenges and opportunities that modern technology presents for comedians today.
Segura’s path to becoming a renowned comedian began with a passion for making people laugh. Influenced by comedic legends such as Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, and George Carlin, he gradually transitioned from an interest in comedy acting to stand-up. Over time, his appreciation for the craft deepened, and he found inspiration in more contemporary figures like Dave Chappelle and Louis C.K. Segura emphasized that some of his most cherished material comes from real-life experiences, which he transforms into compelling routines on stage.
The rise of social media has significantly altered the comedy scene. According to Segura, while the internet has democratized access to comedic content, it has also led to an overwhelming amount of material. Despite this, he believes that true talent still shines through. Stand-up comedy, in particular, is experiencing a golden age due to its accessibility via online platforms. However, Segura stresses that performing live remains distinct from digital success. “You can be great on social media, but getting on stage is a different ballgame,” he noted.
Navigating criticism is an inevitable part of a comedian’s life. Segura explained that comedians often value feedback from their peers more than from general audiences. He acknowledged that pleasing everyone is impossible, and comedians learn to gauge the effectiveness of their material based on audience reactions. Podcasting has also played a crucial role in shaping Segura’s comedy. He views it as a testing ground where ideas are refined before being brought to the stage.
With over two million followers on TikTok, Segura remains unfazed by the platform’s uncertain future. He expressed confidence that if TikTok were to disappear, other platforms would quickly fill the void. Moreover, Segura candidly admitted his preference for a world without these apps, highlighting his focus on live performances.
As Segura continues his "Come Together" tour, his reflections underscore the dynamic relationship between traditional comedy and the digital era. His commitment to honing his craft on stage, while embracing the benefits of modern technology, positions him as a key figure in the ongoing evolution of comedy.
