Reviving Georgia's Musical Legacy: A New Era for Iconic Artifacts

In 2011, the closure of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in Macon left a significant void in the state’s cultural landscape. The museum, which had been showcasing Georgia’s rich musical heritage since 1996, faced financial challenges and declining visitor numbers. After the state withdrew funding, the museum’s vast collection of artifacts, recordings, and instruments seemed destined for uncertainty. However, through the efforts of the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries and partnerships with new venues, these treasures have found a new home and purpose. Today, visitors can experience this remarkable collection at the newly opened Akins Ford Arena, where an array of exhibits celebrates the diverse genres and iconic artists that shaped Georgia’s music scene.

A Journey Through Georgia's Musical History

In the heart of Athens, the Akins Ford Arena has become a beacon for music enthusiasts. This state-of-the-art entertainment venue now houses an extensive exhibition dedicated to Georgia’s musical legacy. The collection, originally safeguarded by the University of Georgia after the Hall of Fame’s closure, spans multiple genres—from soul and R&B to rock and hip hop—highlighting the contributions of legendary artists. Curator Ryan Lewis, a musician and co-founder of Kindercore Records, has been instrumental in expanding the collection over the past decade. With the help of Terence Healy from HealyKohler Design, the exhibition features interactive stations and rotating displays that bring the archives to life. Among the highlights is Duane Allman’s Gibson SG guitar, a prized possession on loan from George Fontaine Sr. of New West Records. The exhibition also includes a floor piano where visitors can play simplified versions of classic songs and a series of portraits from Jason Thrasher’s Athens Potluck, introducing visitors to key figures in the local music scene.

The revival of this collection not only honors Georgia’s musical past but also reinforces Athens’ reputation as a vibrant music destination. By combining education with entertainment, the arena offers a unique experience that celebrates the state’s cultural identity while welcoming both locals and tourists alike.

From an observer’s perspective, this exhibition serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage. It demonstrates how collaboration between institutions and creative minds can breathe new life into historical artifacts, ensuring they remain relevant and accessible to future generations. The success of this project also underscores the role of music in shaping community identity, particularly in cities like Athens, where creativity has long been a driving force. As visitors explore the exhibits, they are reminded that music is more than just sound—it is a reflection of the people and places that create it.
